About the Larrabee Right of Way (ROW) Project
The Larrabee ROW Native Plant Pollinator Garden is a project to restore and replant a degraded forested wetland within an undeveloped public Right of Way (ROW). The site is located between 21st and 22nd St. in the Happy Valley neighborhood. This section of ROW has a small stormwater holding facility on it that is maintained by the City of Bellingham Public Works Dept. Stormwater Division. The site is a well-used urban wildlife habitat, including deer, ducks in the pond, in addition to multiple species of birds.
The site is bordered by housing. The site trails were improved by the City staff. Two benches were installed and there are ongoing community volunteer work parties to remove invasive species, plant and maintain native plants. Volunteer efforts have been led by the local Happy Valley Neighborhood Association. Since the beginning of these restoration efforts and trail improvement in 2020, the neighborhood has noticed an increase amount of people and wildlife using and enjoying the site.
